The National Arts Council (BASATA) has announced groundbreaking changes to support Tanzania’s arts sector, introducing significant fee reductions and waivers. These transformative measures are the result of the SANAA RIGHTS Project, implemented by TARO in partnership with Culture and Development East Africa (CDEA), under the financial support of the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Tanzania.

Key Changes:

1. Registration Fees

  • 100% waiver for choirs, small-scale art traders, non-film halls, and pre-registered entities.

  • 50% reduction for individual artists.

  • 33% reduction for group artists.

  • 60% reduction for art clubs.

2. Permit Fees

  • 100% waiver for non-commercial events, art exhibitions, and emergency artist permits.

  • 70% reduction for East African artists engaged in commercial activities.

  • 66% reduction for art promoters and small traders.

  • 60% reduction for branding/advertising permits (from 5M to 2M TZS).

3. Expected Outcomes

  • Increased artist registrations due to lower costs.

  • More art events and business participation.

  • Growth in Tanzania’s creative economy.

  • Improved data collection for policy-making.

A Collaborative Achievement

These changes reflect the collective efforts of stakeholders committed to advancing Tanzania’s arts sector. We extend our deepest gratitude to:

  • The National Arts Council (BASATA) for their progressive leadership in amending artistic fee regulations.

  • The Ministry of Information, Arts, Culture, and Sports for their unwavering support.

  • The Parliament of Tanzania for endorsing these reforms.

  • All stakeholders who contributed their insights and advocacy to make this possible.

Why This Matters

The SANAA RIGHTS Project, through its partnerships, has paved the way for a more inclusive and vibrant arts industry. By reducing financial barriers, these reforms empower artists, traders, and promoters to innovate, collaborate, and thrive.

Now is the time to seize these opportunities! Whether you’re an individual artist, part of a group, or organizing events, these changes are designed to support your growth and creativity.
